Real Madrid have effectively sealed their place in the semifinals of this season’s Champions League, with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at the Santiago Bernabeu. The defending champions of Spain were able to play on the offensive for the majority of the game, and dominate possession throughout.

Here are some of the key talking points from the game.

Shining Madrid

Real Madrid are something else in the Champions League altogether. Karim Benzema pounced on a loose ball in the box, while Marco Asensio created history as the player with the most goals after coming on as a substitute in the competition.

The Spanish giants completely dominated the first leg, and are pretty much through to the next round.

Shambolic Chelsea

Chelsea didn’t show many signs of improvement on a big European night. Fans that thought the return of Frank Lampard would bring a turnaround in their fortunes will be forgiven for being too optimistic. But, such is the nature of football.

The team managed barely 10 touches inside the Madrid box, and looked lost in attack once again. Thibaut Courtois was comfortable between the sticks, save for a late chance that fell to Mason Mount but was cleared by Antonio Rudiger.

Game Over Already?

Considering Chelsea haven’t scored in their last four games, and are almost attack-less it seems that the tie is over. Real Madrid have a two-goal lead, and Chelsea will have to score three against one of the top sides in the world to turn things around, which seems very unlikely.

Moreover, the red card to Ben Chilwell will also prove to be a significant blow to their chances considering how important the left-back is to the team.
