Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz has been linked with a move to Barcelona for a while now. The youngster only recently returned from a major injury, and has reaffirmed that he is only focusing on getting back to his best with Leverkusen.
He responded to rumours linking him with a switch to Barcelona in a press conference ahead of the Euro qualifiers. “I haven’t heard anything from my father about Barcelona,” he said.
“I just read that and was amazed. I want to end the season well and achieve something with Leverkusen. I don’t look into the future.”
Florian Wirtz response to rumours linking him with Barcelona
The Germany international signed a new deal with Bayer Leverkusen shortly after he got injured, proving his loyalty to them. His new deal runs until 2027, which means that the Bundesliga club are under no pressure to sell him. Moreover, they can also charge a very hefty amount to any club looking to sign him.
The 19-year-old isn’t a target for this summer, but for 2024. Barcelona will have to reduce their expenses by €200 million if they want to sign any new players in June. And even then, the cost of signing new players and registering new contracts could prove to be too much for them.
Barcelona aren’t the only club keeping tabs on Florian Wirtz. The teenager has attracted interest from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich as well as clubs in the Premier League. But for now, no concrete offers have been made for him.
