AMD’s Phoenix U-Series laptop CPUs from the Ryzen 7040 family are starting to appear, with the Ryzen 7 7840U now leaked. The AMD Ryzen 5 7640U Phoenix CPU was recently discovered on Geekbench. This was also one of the first official Ryzen 7000 CPUs confirmed by AMD for laptops. There are more, as expected, and we now have our first look at the Ryzen 7 7840U.
Another Ryzen 7040U Phoenix APU designed for 15-28W laptop designs is the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U. This CPU has 8 cores and 16 threads and is based on the Zen 4-core architecture. It also includes a Radeon 780M iGPU with the RDNA 3 graphics architecture. In Cinebench R23, the CPU is shown to have a 3.3 GHz base clock, which is 500 MHz lower than the base clock of the Ryzen 7 7840HS, but that chip has a TDP of 54W.
The Cinebench R23 Multi-Threaded performance result for the AMD Ryzen 7 7840U CPU appears to be very good.
The chip scores 14,771 points, which puts it ahead of the 45W Ryzen 9 6980HX. The CPU is also more than 40% faster in multi-threading than the Ryzen 7 6800U, another 8-core and 16-thread Zen 3+ SKU.
This Lenovo laptop is also said to use half the power of the previous generation while providing better single-core and multi-core performance. Graphics performance is said to have been doubled while maintaining excellent battery timing.
Other benchmark results mentioned include around 700 points in the Cinebench R20 (Single-Core) test, around 3000 graphics score in 3DMark Time Spy, which we previously saw for the Radeon 780M, and a FireStrike graphics score of 8000 points.
The AMD Ryzen 7040U Phoenix Laptop CPUs, which include the Ryzen 7 7840U and Ryzen 5 7640U, are expected to arrive in thin and light notebooks in the coming quarter. Let’s wait and see more results.
