Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 5-2 at Anfield in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 clash. The repeat of last year’s final saw the same result, but a much more exciting game played at Merseyside.

A disastrous opening 20 minutes from Real Madrid saw the defending champions of Europe down 2-0. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring four minutes into the game with a skillful flick, while a howler from Thibaut Courtois gave Mo Salah the opportunity to tap the ball in.

Liverpool were unable to hold their lead, however, and have a mountain to climb in the second leg.

Key takeaways from Real Madrid’s comeback against Liverpool

Goalkeeping howlers on both ends

Both Alisson and Thibaut Courtois were at fault for one goal each. While Courtois’ error came early, Alisson’s botched clearance ended up in the back of the net after Vinicius Jr pressed his compatriot into hitting the ball right at him. However, the Brazilian was beaten far more times, and was unlucky to concede Benzema’s deflected goal as he was caught totally wrong footed.

Down, but never out

Real Madrid have made a habit of rising from the ashes after being written off since last season. And that trend seems to have continued this season, since they overturned a two-goal deficit to win 5-2 away from home.

Vinicius shines once again

Vinicius Jr has emerged as a talismanic figure for Real Madrid in big games. The Brazilian scored a brace and provided the assist for Benzema’s second goal to cap off a man of the match performance.

He is now the third-highest scorer in this season’s Champions League with six goals – behind Salah with 8 and Mbappe with 7.
