India moves up 10 spots in terms of the world's median cellular speeds

In the fixed broadband category, India was ranked 81st in November of last year. With mobile download speeds of 161.15 Mbps, the UAE moved up one position to take the lead in the median mobile speed test category, while Singapore held onto the top spot in the median fixed broadband category with mobile speeds of 234.55 Mbps.

A monthly ranking of internet speed tests for nations and cities is provided by the Speedtest Global Test index. Each month, Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index compares results from speed tests conducted all across the world. According to the business, data for the Global Index is derived from the hundreds of millions of actual users who use speed tests to test their Internet performance each month.

In terms of cities, Dubai moved up two spots to take the lead in the median mobile speed test category with a download speed of 204.37 Mbps, while Beijing, the capital of China, took the lead in the broadband speed test category with a download speed of 277.57 Mbps. The change occurs when 5G services are rapidly rolled out across Indian cities. India is anticipated to have about 150 million 5G customers by 2024, helped by faster adoption in the second half of 2023, according to the India Mobile Broadband Index report. According to the estimate, the number of 4G and 5G subscribers in the country would increase to 990 million by 2024.

By the end of 2023, cumulative 5G smartphone shipments would surpass those of 4G, according to the report, which also noted that more than 70 million 5G devices were sent to India in 2022. The telecom sector in India is anticipated to increase by $12.5 billion per three years, according to a joint analysis by Deloitte India and the CII, as 5G will speed up economic growth, create more jobs, and connect the rural and urban populations.

In October of last year, Ookla reported that 5G download speeds in the nation had hit 500 Mbps on test networks, with Reliance Jio Infocomm recording a median download speed of around 600 Mbps on its 5G network in Delhi. Jio recorded 598.58 Mbps since June 2022, while Airtel recorded over 200 Mbps median download speed at 197.98 Mbps in the nation’s capital.
