Brazil have become the second team to qualify for the Round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup, following their 1-0 win over Switzerland. Casemiro scored the match-winning goal for the record champions in the second half to help them earn a narrow win.
They join France as the only two teams to have earned passage into the knockout stages so far. And on the other hand, Switzerland will need to win their last group stage game in order to have any chance of making it through.
Brazil earn narrow win over Switzerland
Vinicius Jr thought he had the opener earlier in the second half, but it was deemed offside. Richarlison contested for the ball after returning from an offside position, which ultimately caused the goal to be chalked off.
The Real Madrid winger was a constant threat to the opposition defenders and was at his free-flowing best. But he wasn’t able to cap the performance with a goal to his name.Â
Casemiro’s shot took a deflection to end up in the back of the net, leaving Yann Sommer very little chance to intervene. The South American team defended extremely well, too. They didn’t allow a single shot on goal from their opponents, blocking almost all their efforts.
Brazil now head into their final group stage game against Cameroon having qualified.
