Samsung to soon release its Next-Generation 990 Pro Flagship SSDs

With its first PCIe Gen4 SSD for client PCs, the 980 Pro, Samsung was a little bit late to the party and lost some market share to Phison and its partners. The company’s upcoming 990 Pro SSDs are already listed in the South Korean customs database because it does not want to be tardy with its PCIe Gen5 drives for enthusiast-grade drives.

The only information about the impending drives that can be gleaned from Samsung’s 990 Pro SSD entry in the customs database (found by @Harukaze5719) is their model numbers (MZ-V9P1T0, MZ-V9P2T0), which may indicate 1TB and 2TB versions. Even while 1TB and 2TB capacities are currently not the highest capacity points for M.2 drives, they show that the upcoming Samsung 990 Pro SSDs will not be aimed at budget PCs.

More CPUs with PCIe compatibility will be released this autumn from AMD (codenamed Raphael) and Intel. Processors with a PCIe 5.0 interface have been shipping for just over a year (codenamed Raptor Lake). Therefore, it is unlikely that businesses like Samsung would develop another generation of high-end SSDs with a PCIe 4.0 interface. It is safe to anticipate that Samsung’s 990 Pro SSDs of the future will include a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface.

Samsung has actually been selling PM1743 enterprise-grade PCIe Gen5 SSDs for some time, but given their placement, such drives are overkill for a desktop PC and are pricey.

Additionally, they require a specific adapter for desktops because they have an E3.S form-factor. As a result, only few enthusiasts combined them with systems powered by Intel’s 12th Generation Core “Alder Lake” processors.

Samsung’s 990 Pro SSDs, in contrast, are anticipated to utilise an M.2-2280 form factor and are thus compatible with desktops and laptops. Only the amount of heat their drives produce and the type of cooling system they need are unclear.
