The updated playlist experience for YouTube Music was one of the Android apps Google claimed will get tablet optimizations at I/O 2022, and it’s now live.

YouTube Music UI Redesign

Update 6/7: For some users, YouTube Music’s redesigned playlists are now showing up on their Android phones. It hasn’t been widely implemented yet, and it’s only the new appearance in a single column.

The share button is now located next to play and shuffle, rather than in the top-right corner. When you’re in a playlist you produced (which contains Your Likes), it’s the latter, whereas YouTube Music playlists are the former. Meanwhile, because the top half is larger, you first see fewer tracks per screen.

Original 6/4: Before the on-stage announcement, this view was put through A/B testing, and it only applies to playlists, which are perhaps the most important aspect of the streaming service. Your playlists and those generated by YouTube Music will both get a makeover, but albums will not.

About the Other Features

The YouTube Music playlist revamp has been deployed out (versions 5.08 and 5.09) on an Android tablet and a Chromebook as of today. This new look does not appear on any of the phones we tested, nor on the iPad app. It’s unclear whether the feature will be expanded to include phone views or album views.

YouTube Music had been optimizing its mobile apps for large displays even before the developer conference. A new Home feed debuted in 2022, taking advantage of the extra screen real estate, while Now Playing has always had a two-column layout. Meanwhile, Android app settings were been streamlined.
