According to NASA, this big star is still immature in cosmic terms, around one million years old, and is shedding its natal cocoon of material, ionized gasses like hydrogen and nitrogen, seen here as red (hydrogen) and green (nitrogen) from [the Hubble Space Telescope].

NASA and Lagoon Nebula

The Lagoon Nebula is nearly 5,000 light-years from Earth or around 24 quadrillion miles. In 1654, Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Hodierna spotted the nebula while collecting nebulous objects in the night sky.

As per NASA, the claims that M8, which is 5,200 light-years away from Earth, has its own star cluster, NGC 6530. Large stars within the nebula emit massive amounts of UV radiation, which ionizes the gas and causes it to sparkle.

The nebula is located in the constellation Sagittarius from Earth, and it can occasionally be seen with the unaided eye in the darkest heavens on clear nights. While the Hubble Telescope’s imaging systems can capture stunning colors, the nebula appears grey to the naked eye. August is the greatest month to see it.
