India Bagged its first ever Thomas Cup today and created a history. India defeated Indonesia to snatch it’s first ever win.
India’s chief coach Pullela Gopichand spoke to India Today, expressing delight over the Thomas Cup Triumph.
“It’s huge, this victory is huge. I think the way Lakshya started set the momentum up and in these championships especially where badminton is huge, I think that pressure just builds on. I think that the way Srikanth and Lakshya played extremely well to build the pressure and of course Satwik and Chirag were just magical.” he said.

Lakshya Sen, doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and Kidambi Srikanth scripted a win as the Indian men’s badminton team beat Indonesia 3-0 to win their first-ever Thomas Cup trophy. Kidambi Srikanth beat 21-15, 23-21 Jonatan Christie in the second singles and India grabbed its maiden gold in the history of the competition. Lakshya was brilliant initially as the youngster recorded a come-from-behind win over world number five Anthony Sinisuka Ginting. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then showed their skill-set and experience to outsmart Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo. It was Kidambi Srikanth who bagged Thomas Cup gold for India by defeating Asian games gold medallist Jonatan Christie 21-15 23-21.
Sports Minister announces special prize for the winners
Indian sports minister Anurag Thakur announced a cash award of Rs 1 crore for the winners of the Thomas Cup via tweet.
