Intel CPUs are leading over AMD in Japan’s DIY Market

According to the latest BCNR Japanese DIY market survey, Intel CPUs have reclaimed their lead over AMD Ryzen CPUs, which enjoyed a three-year reign as the x86 market leader.

The BCN Rankings are based on sales statistics gathered and compiled from actual sales data of PCs and components from major retailers and online DIY shops in Japan, which account for roughly 40% of the market.

We started back in 2019 that AMD and Intel had split the market 50-50 after the successful launch of the Ryzen Desktop CPUs. Now, three years later, AMD’s dominant streak has come to an end. Still, it was a magnificent run in which the company outperformed its competition quarter after quarter and achieved sales statistics unmatched by any other chip. Now it appears that Intel has reclaimed the throne of the Japanese DIY CPU industry, as the company continues to gain market share, reaching 74 per cent in January 2022, compared to AMD’s 25 per cent.

AMD

With a market share of 35.7 per cent, Intel’s Core i5 CPUs are on track to match AMD Ryzen 5 CPU sales by early 2020, while Core i7 CPUs are in second place with a market share of 25 per cent. Sales of AMD Ryzen 5 CPUs have dropped to 12.6 per cent, while sales of Core i3 and Core i9 CPUs are at 10.4 and 7.5 per cent, respectively.

The persistent Ryzen CPU scarcity is the main reason for the fall in AMD CPU sales and the absence of Ryzen 9 and Ryzen 7 parts. The logistical and shipment issues currently afflicting the market have had a significant impact on AMD.

So, when you look at the big picture, Intel was in the same spot as AMD a few quarters ago. The tides have shifted, and supply shortages are affecting Ryzen CPUs, while the blue team is regaining ground in the Japanese DIY category.
