NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti Delayed due to ‘450W’ GA102 GPU Yields

NVIDIA teased their top GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card at CES 2022, asking players to check back later that month for additional information. We’re three days past the end of January, and NVIDIA appears to have either forgotten about the RTX 3090 Ti graphics card or something went wrong with the new flagship.

Moore’s Law is Dead recently released a video detailing how NVIDIA has been silent with its AIB partners and has yet to reveal anything about the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics card. In late January, the graphics card was supposed to be unveiled. The 27th was the last date we had heard about through the grapevine, but it didn’t happen. However, neither of them saw any news about the graphics card.

Well, it’s still all conjecture, but MLID’s sources do point out a few things that we’ve heard from our sources as well. First and foremost, the card was noted to have PCB and BIOS difficulties, which were eventually fixed. However, the newest news on the RTX 3090 Ti is that NVIDIA doesn’t have enough Ampere GPUs to mass-produce the GeForce flagship.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti has the same GA102 GPU as the RTX A6000, and it’s been more than a year since the original GeForce RTX 3090 was released, so one would think that Samsung’s yields would have improved. However, the RTX 3090 Ti will not use any GA102 GPU; instead, it will use the full-fat die with everything enabled, as well as higher clock speeds, which is why the TGP has increased from 350W to 450W. And it appears like NVIDIA is having difficulty creating Ampere GA102 dies that hit the proper clocks with the right power.

But it begs the question: why would NVIDIA show off the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti in the first place, knowing how difficult it would be to manufacture such a GPU? They could have waited until the proper time to reveal the card, but it’s more likely that they wanted to make a statement that they were still king of the hill, knowing that AMD will release an RDNA 2 upgrade in 2022.

Another element that we all seem to overlook is whether the new 21 Gbps dies that power the 3090 Ti’s memory side are insufficient to supply. These dies will provide faster speeds and twice the capacity, while GDDR6X was already a severe bottleneck in the original lineup’s manufacture. As a result, we must take that into account as well.

Even though the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti has been ‘indefinitely’ delayed, numerous dealers are still advertising unpublished bespoke models for around $4000 US. Pre-orders for GALAX’s Gamer EX Black model, which isn’t even the top model that the manufacturer will have to sell, have begun at one such outlet in Vietnam, with prices starting at roughly 88 million VN. The HOF Extreme, GALAX’s highest model, is expected to cost roughly $6000 USD+. When we inquired about the graphics card’s availability in Vietnam, our source claimed that consumers who pay the full price of the card will be able to obtain it.

The boost clock (2617 MHz) of the RTX 5080 is higher than the RTX 5090 and even higher on the custom editions from NVIDIA's board partners. The availability, however, is the main question as NVIDIA themselves have stated that both the GeForce RTX 5090 & RTX 5080 will be short in supply, and they are expecting a huge demand for these next-gen gaming solutions. Several retailers have also stated that they will have limited GPU stock which will only be replenished in the coming weeks
