Google preparing its own AR Headset to crack down on Apple

The search engine behemoth is rumored to be working on an augmented reality headset, with the most recent information indicating that the device is codenamed, Project Iris. Although it is expected to come after Apple releases its version, the release might fuel the Metaverse warfare, with each big tech company developing its ecosystem.

According to those familiar with the situation, Google’s product, like planned AR headsets from Meta and Apple, uses outward-facing cameras to deliver a video feed of the actual world and aid in the generation of computer images. The company hopes to ship it in 2024 at the earliest, but don’t be surprised if it’s delayed, as Apple is also expected to delay the introduction of its AR headset until 2023 owing to overheating and software concerns.

Like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, this gadget is reported to include a proprietary processor, albeit its identity remains unknown. Because Google’s Pixel hardware is engaged in its development, it’s probable that when it’s formally released, it’ll have the term ‘Pixel’ added somewhere, exactly like the company’s smartphone line. The headset’s early prototypes are said to resemble a pair of ski goggles, and they don’t require any extra power to operate.

The device runs Android as well, though recent job advertisements suggest that a new operating system is in the works. Due to power constraints, Google will use its huge data centers to create some visuals remotely and display them into the headset over an internet connection, most likely utilizing the newest Wi-Fi standard.

As you can see, there are few specifics about Project Iris, as the headset’s development appears to be taking place in a secure facility that requires special keycards to enter, as well as non-disclosure agreements to prevent crucial information from being leaked. The project’s core team numbers roughly 300 individuals, with Google planning to hire hundreds more to accelerate development. Clay Bavor, who reports directly to CEO Sundar Pichai, is in charge of development.

Unfortunately, pricing was not mentioned in the current report, but Google may be waiting for Apple to act first before deciding on a new strategy.
