In a surprising turn of events for Barcelona, Samuel Umtiti has extended his contract until 2026 and has agreed a lower salary. The centre-back was one of the highest earning defenders in the line-up. His previous contract was due to expire in 18 months time.

However, despite his lucrative contract, he has been unable to prove his worth on the pitch. Constant injuries and poor performances have made him an unpopular figure among fans at Camp Nou, with spectators often booing him for his shortcomings.

Samuel Umtiti agrees lower salary for Barcelona to register Ferran Torres

Although Barcelona have tried hard to sell the player over the last year, they have failed to reach an agreement for the transfer of the player. The French defender has extended his contract for five more years, and has agreed to try and improve in the years to come.

With Umtiti’s lowered salary, and the departure of Philippe Coutinho to Aston Villa, Barcelona can now register Ferran Torres. They signed him from Manchester City for €65 million, and will be paying the transfer fee over the course of the next few years.

The former Valencia man has been presented as a new Barcelona player, but the club couldn’t register him due to La Liga’s salary cap rules.

But even though he will be registered now, he won’t be available for the Blaugrana’s Supercopa fixture against Real Madrid. The winger, alongside Pedri, are still positive for COVID-19. Hence, it will be a while before Torres can feature for his new club.
