Manchester United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 away from home to save Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s job as manager. The Norwegian was under serious pressure after their 5-0 loss to Liverpool in the previous game. But, his team earned a well-deserved win to ease the pressure for the time being.
In a change of formation, Solskjær opted for three central defenders. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof started alongside the returning Raphael Varane. Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo both led the line, with Bruno Fernandes operating behind them.
Manchester United kept their first clean sheet in ten games, as Varane returned to the team. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with an outstanding strike from a tight angle. He would then set up Edinson Cavani’s goal at the hour mark.
Tottenham Hotspur could not muster up a good attacking display, or test David De Gea much. The majority of their offense came from Son, and Emerson Royal, but there was an overall lack of positive chances. United let them have the ball and were very quick and clinical on the counter attack. That was exactly how Cavani doubled United’s lead.
Marcus Rashford came on as a substitute for Ronaldo at 70 minutes, and would go on to score once more. Rashford raced past the Spurs defense and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner.
Questions will be asked of Tottenham’s performance today, and whether Nuno Espirito Santo needs to influence the team more. United, on the other hand, head into their Champions League match against Atalanta with clear momentum.
