Top 5 longest-serving football managers across the top 5 European leagues

Football has grown extremely competitive in recent years, with clubs willing to fire managers and personnel if they do not achieve the necessary results. Because of the large sums of money involved in the game, only outcomes matter, which is why the club hires and fires management. In this article, we look at the five longest-serving coaches in Europe’s top five leagues.

1) Christian Streich (SC Freiburg) – 9 years, 6 months

Christian Streich began his playing career at the lower levels of the Bundesliga before moving into coaching. He guided the Freiburg Under-19 team and assisted the head coach until being named the permanent manager in December 2011. The 56-year-old has kept Freiburg playing at the highest level during his stint as manager, however, he has yet to win a championship with them.

2) Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid) – 9 years, 6 months

Diego Simeone had great success as a player, but it is reasonable to say that he has cemented his reputation as a legend as a manager, having led Atletico Madrid to countless accolades since taking over the reins in December 2011. Atletico Madrid is considered one of Europe’s heavyweights thanks to Simeone, who has won two LaLiga crowns, two Europa Leagues, one Copa del Rey, and two UEFA Super Cups thus far.

He also led them to the Champions League title in 2019.
