Mason Thames Confirmed as Dick Grayson in DC Studios’ Dynamic Duo

DC Studios has officially confirmed that Mason Thames will voice Dick Grayson, the original Robin, in the animated feature Dynamic Duo. Co-chairman Peter Safran made the confirmation in an interview with Collider, after Deadline and TheWrap had first reported the casting.

Safran said Thames had always wanted to play the role, and he praised the actor’s audition, calling him “awesome” in the process. The confirmation gives the studio’s official backing to a casting choice that fans of the character have followed closely.

In the story, Grayson is taken in by Bruce Wayne and becomes the Robin to his Batman, while Todd falls in with the Red Hood Gang. Their friendship is tested by competing visions of the future, which leads to a new Dynamic Duo. The title refers to the pair of Robins rather than to Batman and Robin, which is why the film centres on the two young characters.

The Voice Cast

Logan Kim, known for Ghostbusters: Afterlife and The Walking Dead: Dead City, has been cast as Jason Todd. Lee Pace and Steve Buscemi will voice the Red Hood villains.

The Creative Team

Arthur Mintz is directing the film, which is an animated feature with puppet and CGI elements. Mintz has experience directing puppet theatre productions and worked as a contributing writer on the Netflix series Lost Ollie.

The film is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, alongside Matt Reeves’ production company 6th & Idaho and the New Orleans-based animation studio Swaybox Studios. Reeves has spoken about his long-held wish to make a film with Mintz and Swaybox, saying Dynamic Duo was the project that would bring them together.

The script is credited to Matthew Aldrich, Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, was among those who announced the greenlight, describing himself as “over the moon” about the project.

The casting gives DC Studios a Robin for a film that is not part of its live-action universe. Dynamic Duo is described as the studio’s first formally announced project that is not in the new DC Universe.

The film is also the first collaboration between DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures Animation under the leadership of Bill Damaschke, according to reports.

Release Date

Dynamic Duo is scheduled for release in theatres on 22 September 2028. The date was moved from 30 June, according to reports.

Thames’s Reaction

Shortly after the casting was reported, Thames shared an Instagram story showing a collection of Nightwing comics and DC merchandise. Reports say the post suggested he is looking forward to the role and to Grayson’s later identity as Nightwing.
