Lenovo unleashes ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 as an answer to Dell’s Precision 5000 series

Lenovo’s ThinkPad P1, which was launched back in 2018 and Dell’s Precision 5530, rivals that went toe-to-toe with each other. But things seem to have been stagnant since then, especially for Lenovo. As we know that since the launch of ThinkPad P1 in 2018, all other versions that followed only had minute changes added to them. However, the basic design remained the same.

The ThinkPad P1 Gen 2 added an OLED option, and the third model, ThinkPad P1 Gen 3, was available with WWAN. However, its competitor Dell has completely revamped its Precision 5000 series. It introduced a 17-inch model in the form of the Dell Precision 5750 to compliment the Precision 5550.

It also shifted from the 16:9 to the 16:10 format, introduced vapour chamber cooling in the 5750, and dropped all legacy ports favouring USB Type-C. However, no it seems that Lenovo is finally ready to react against Dell with its new ThinkPad P1 Gen 4.

Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 will adopt the 16:10 format and increase screen size from 15.6 to 16 inches. The base 400 cd/m² screen now has a 2,560 x 1,600 (WQXGA); however, an OLED display is not available. But it still offers a 600 cd/m² 4K option (3,840 x 2,400). The base screen is matte, and the 4K screen is either matte (non-touch) or glossy (touch).

The device also comes with a fingerprint reader integrated with the power button. It has kept all the legacy ports, including HDMI, 2x USB A, and the SD card reader. The webcam has been upgraded to 1080p, and the new ThinkPad P1 will be offered with 5G.

The processor is none other than the Tiger Lake H, and both Core- and Xeon-CPUs are available. The GeForce RTX 3070 and 3080 are gonna be available as the Ampere options. There are two RAM slots (up to 64 GB DDR4-3200, ECC for the Xeon models), two M.2 2280 SSD bays, and the 90 Wh battery (up from 80 Wh).

Lenovo tells us the ThinkPad P1 Gen 4 will make it to the market in July. The base price will be quite steep, starting at $2,099.
