The Busan International Film Festival is bringing in a familiar face to close out this year’s edition in style. On September 4, organizers confirmed that actor Yim Si Wan has been appointed sole host for the closing ceremony of the 31st BIFF this October — a fitting honor for one of Korean cinema’s most versatile performers.

A Festival Finale With High Stakes

The closing ceremony isn’t just a farewell party — it’s where the Busan Awards are handed out, honoring winners of the festival’s competitive section, which was newly introduced just last year. That makes Yim Si Wan’s hosting role more than ceremonial; he’ll be at the center of one of the night’s most anticipated moments in Korean film.

This pairs with an earlier announcement that actress Kim Min Ha will host the festival’s opening ceremony, giving this year’s BIFF two strong faces bookending the event.

From Idol Group to Acclaimed Actor

Yim Si Wan’s journey to this moment has been a long one. He debuted as a member of boy group ZE:A back in 2010 before transitioning into acting with 2012’s “The Moon Embracing the Sun.” Since then, he’s built a genuinely diverse filmography spanning acclaimed dramas like “Misaeng: Incomplete Life,” “Summer Strike,” and “Boyhood,” alongside films such as “The Attorney,” “Emergency Declaration,” and “Road to Boston.”

Why This Appointment Matters

BIFF holds a unique place in global cinema — it’s the only Asia-based festival recognized as a qualifying pathway for the International Feature Film category at the Academy Awards, alongside giants like Cannes, Venice, and Toronto. Having an actor of Yim Si Wan’s caliber and range host the closing night reflects the festival’s continued push to elevate its profile both domestically and internationally.

With ten days of screenings, industry events, and now two high-profile hosts confirmed, this year’s BIFF is shaping up to be one of its most star-studded editions yet.
