Mirzapur The Movie Review: 4/5 Rating, Sure-Shot Hit Verdict

4 out of 5. That is the score trade analyst Taran Adarsh has handed to Mirzapur: The Movie, and the verdict attached to it is even bolder — a “sure-shot hit.” As the film opens in cinemas across India today, Friday, September 4, 2026, this the movie review roundup starts with a rare unanimous nod: one review counted, one positive, zero neutral, zero negative. For a franchise built on swearing, shootouts and Purvanchal politics, the critics’ wall has cracked wide open in its favour.

Adarsh’s assessment, shared via his official thread, calls the film a “peak mass entertainer” and describes a “roaring, ruthless, razor-sharp” big-screen upgrade of the iconic web series. The praise is not qualified with the usual “for fans only” caveat.

According to the review, sharp writing, punchy dialogues, strong performances and explosive action make it work equally for first-time viewers. That last point is the real commercial signal — a franchise film that converts non-fans widens its opening weekend ceiling considerably. Advance indicators have been building for weeks; our earlier coverage of Mirzapur: The Movie Advance bookings already pointed to strong footfalls in UP, Bihar and the Delhi NCR belt.

The Cast Powering The Big-Screen Gamble

Here’s the thing about this adaptation: it leans on the two faces fans demanded most. Pankaj Tripathi reprises Akhandanand Tripathi — Kaleen Bhaiya — the mafia boss whose quiet menace defined the series.

Divyenndu returns as Munna Tripathi, a character whose fate in the web version made his comeback the film’s biggest talking point. Ali Fazal completes the core triangle as Guddu Pandit. Excel Entertainment, led by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, produces, with Gurmmeet Singh directing.

The casting math is straightforward: three established fan-loved characters, one theatrical canvas. Our comparison piece on Mirzapur: The Movie vs Avengers: Endgame tracked how pre-release buzz stacked against Hollywood benchmarks in the same corridors.

Box Office And OTT Economics Ahead

The theatrical window is only the first act. Following its cinema run, the film is slated to stream on Amazon Prime Video, keeping the franchise’s long-standing home intact. That dual-window model is exactly what Excel has executed across its slate — theatrical premium first, streaming reach second. For exhibitors, the question is whether opening-day momentum holds through the weekend; for the platform, the series’ binge audience becomes a ready-made streaming funnel.

We had mapped this release corridor in our earlier feature on Mirzapur Advance Booking: The numbers that shaped exhibitor confidence, and the franchise’s streaming dominance was covered in our deep-dive from Mirzapur 3 to Bigg Boss crossover buzz. The bottom line: with a 4/5 from the trade’s most-watched reviewer on day one, Mirzapur: The Movie has the critical cover it needs — now the box office must do the rest.
