The Beast That Almost Wasn’t: How Vijay Nearly Signed With Vetrimaaran and Sudha Kongara First

Every blockbuster has an origin story, but few are as surprising as this one. Before Thalapathy Vijay ever stepped onto the set of Beast, he was reportedly lined up for something entirely different — with two of Tamil cinema’s most acclaimed filmmakers.

Composer GV Prakash Kumar, who has worked closely with Vijay over the years, recently pulled back the curtain on a project that could have completely changed the actor’s filmography.

What GV Prakash Actually Revealed

In a candid chat with SS Music, GV Prakash shared that Vijay was originally set to collaborate with directors Vetrimaaran and Sudha Kongara, with the composer himself attached to score the music. But there was a catch — both directors needed a full year to work on the script before committing.

That delay ended up changing everything. The call sheet meant for their film was eventually handed over to Beast instead, the 2022 action entertainer that released with Nelson Dilipkumar in the director’s chair.

Where Did the Script Go?

Here’s the twist: the story didn’t just disappear. According to GV Prakash, Sudha Kongara later pitched the very same script to Mahesh Babu. However, that project hasn’t taken shape yet either, leaving fans to wonder what could have been — twice over.

Vijay ‘s Timeline of Events

GV Prakash also mentioned working with Ajith Kumar on an upcoming motorsport documentary directed by AL Vijay, adding another interesting thread to his packed schedule.

Why This Revelation Matters Now

The timing of this reveal is notable — it comes right after Vijay wrapped up his acting career with Jana Nayagan, directed by H. Vinoth, officially marking his retirement from Tamil cinema. Fans re-examining his filmography are naturally curious about the paths not taken, and a potential Vetrimaaran or Sudha Kongara collaboration would have been a very different flavor compared to the mass entertainers Vijay was known for.

Vetrimaaran, known for gritty, realistic storytelling, and Sudha Kongara, celebrated for emotionally driven narratives, represent a different cinematic sensibility than what Beast eventually delivered. It’s easy to see why this “what if” has fans talking.

A Look Back at Vijay’s Final Chapter

Jana Nayagan followed the story of a former official named Thalapathy Vetri Kondan, who adopts a young girl and raises her to be strong and independent, only to be pulled into a larger conflict involving a personal vendetta. The film featured a stacked cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, and Prakash Raj, and is now streaming on ZEE5 following its theatrical run.

With this final release marking the end of an era, throwbacks like this one from GV Prakash offer fans one more piece of the puzzle in understanding Vijay’s decades-long journey through Tamil cinema.
