From Savinho to Sávio: Here’s Why Former Man City Winger Reverted to his Old Name after joining Spurs

A fresh club, a fresh shirt number, and now, a fresh name too. Brazilian winger Savinho has officially completed his move to Tottenham Hotspur from Manchester City, and alongside the transfer, he’s made a personal change — reverting back to the name Sávio, which he wore before his time at the Etihad.

The Name Behind the Name

Born Sávio Moreira de Oliveira in São Mateus, Espírito Santo, the 22-year-old was known simply as Sávio during his loan spells at PSV and Girona, where he first built his reputation in LaLiga. Speaking in a 2024 interview, he explained that the “Savinho” name actually originated from his first Brazil national team call-up, when it was printed on his shirt, and he later asked Manchester City to use it too, hoping it would bring him luck.

A Fresh Start in North London

Despite the luck he’d hoped for, Sávio struggled to nail down a regular starting spot under Pep Guardiola, prompting his permanent move to Spurs as their seventh major summer signing. He could make his Tottenham debut in the Carabao Cup clash against Charlton Athletic, with fans hoping the name change signals a genuine turnaround in fortunes.
