Netflix’s biggest movie of the year is getting a sequel, and it’s borrowing a trick straight from sci-fi history. The follow-up to Alan Ritchson‘s smash hit “War Machine” is officially titled “War Machines” — plural, and very deliberate.

One Letter Changes Everything

The title was revealed through a black-and-white Instagram tease showing a script cover beneath a menacing mech, with a slow zoom onto the final letter: an “S.” It’s the same escalation trick Ridley Scott’s “Alien” pulled when James Cameron’s sequel became “Aliens” — signaling this isn’t just a bigger story, it’s a bigger threat, with more than one War Machine now in play.

Writers Patrick Hughes and James Beaufort are behind the sequel’s script. Ritchson celebrated the announcement on social media, expressing gratitude to fans and the team behind the franchise’s growth, and noting the wild ride is only just getting started.

Why Netflix Moved So Fast

The numbers explain the urgency. “War Machine” launched globally on March 6, 2026, and racked up roughly 146.9 million views (266.8 million hours) in just months — comfortably beating the year’s next biggest film by a wide margin and landing a spot on Netflix’s all-time Top 10 Most-Watched Films list. With numbers like that, greenlighting a big-budget sequel practically greenlit itself.
