‘One Night in Idaho: The College Murders’ Renewed for Season 2 at Amazon With New Testimony

One Night in Idaho: The College Murders is coming back for a second run. Amazon Prime Video has officially renewed the true-crime docuseries, bringing fresh testimony into a case that gripped the country following the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students.

The new season will shift focus toward the law enforcement side of the investigation, giving voice to officers who were previously barred from speaking publicly about the case due to a gag order.

Season 2 Renewal: The Key Details

Prime Video has greenlit three new episodes for Season 2, expanding on the four-part first season that premiered in 2025. Unlike Season 1, which centered on the victims’ families and friends, this next chapter pivots toward the investigators who worked to identify and apprehend the killer.

The series first arrived on Prime Video in July 2025, ahead of Bryan Kohberger’s guilty plea, and was praised for its restrained, careful approach to a case that had otherwise generated significant tabloid coverage. Season 2 looks to build on that approach while finally bringing the law enforcement perspective into the narrative.

New Testimony From Investigators

What sets this season apart is access. According to Amazon, the officers featured were previously unable to discuss the case publicly because of a gag order tied to the ongoing legal proceedings. With Kohberger’s guilty plea now resolved, those restrictions have lifted, opening the door for investigators to share their accounts for the first time.

The season will be told through the first-person perspectives of several key figures central to the investigation.

These accounts will be paired with archival material the producers say includes bodycam footage, recorded police interviews, and forensic evidence gathered throughout the investigation. The combination is intended to walk viewers through the procedural side of the case in a way Season 1, which focused on personal loss and grief, did not.

Beyond the new law enforcement angle, the season will also check back in with people who appeared in the first season, including friends and family members, offering an update on where things stand more than a year removed from Kohberger’s guilty plea.

Behind the Camera

The creative team behind Season 1 is largely returning for the new episodes, maintaining continuity in tone and approach across both seasons.

Liz Garbus, who co-directed part of Season 1, returns as an executive producer for the new season, alongside a list of additional executive producers including James Patterson, Bill Robinson, and Patrick Santa. The series remains a joint production between Amazon MGM Studios, Paramount Television Studios, Story Syndicate, James Patterson Entertainment, and Fairhaven.

The Case Behind the Series

The docuseries chronicles the November 2022 murders of Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, and Xana Kernodle, who were stabbed to death in their off-campus rental home near the University of Idaho in Moscow. The case drew national attention during the lengthy investigation and subsequent arrest of Bryan Kohberger, a criminology graduate student who was eventually linked to the crime.

Kohberger pleaded guilty to all charges in 2025, avoiding the death penalty in exchange for accepting four consecutive life sentences. That resolution effectively lifted the gag order that had prevented investigators from speaking about the case, paving the way for the testimony now featured in Season 2.

The case has generated significant attention across the true-crime genre, with multiple competing documentary and dramatized projects covering the same events from different angles. One Night in Idaho distinguished itself within that crowded field by leaning on intimate, first-person interviews rather than dramatic reenactments, a tone the producers appear set to carry into the new season’s law enforcement-focused episodes.

With production details and a premiere window still to be confirmed, fans of the series can expect Season 2 to offer a fuller picture of an investigation that, until now, has largely been told from the outside looking in.
