Chhaava OTT Debut on Netflix Shatters Indian Historical Drama Records

Chhaava, directed by Laxman Utekar, premiered on Netflix on June 3, 2026. The film shattered several engagement records for Indian historical dramas on the platform.

Vicky Kaushal delivers a powerful performance as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Produced by Dinesh Vijan under the Maddock Films banner, this cinematic achievement successfully translated its massive theatrical success into impressive streaming numbers.

Chhaava OTT: Production Scale and Box Office Dominance

The production scale of Chhaava marks a significant achievement for Indian historical cinema, based on the acclaimed 1980 Marathi novel by Shivaji Sawant. Before its OTT release, the film enjoyed a remarkable run in theaters, reportedly surpassing ₹850 crore in domestic collections, according to Times of India Entertainment.

Global audiences also embraced the film, with worldwide box office figures estimated to have crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark. These impressive numbers show the growing demand for high-budget, culturally rich storytelling that combines star appeal with historical themes.

Not everyone thinks that historical accuracy should take a backseat to cinematic flair. Some critics argue that the creative liberties in adapting Shivaji Sawant’s work might overshadow the complex political realities of that time.

However, the overwhelming viewership data shows that audiences seem to prioritize the film’s emotional impact and visual spectacle over academic critiques. The collaboration between Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, who plays Yesubai, has significantly contributed to this sustained interest among various demographics.

Looking ahead, the success of this film will likely influence how major production houses approach upcoming period dramas. By combining a strong literary foundation with a high-profile cast, Maddock Films has demonstrated that original Indian content can attract global attention, as noted in recent coverage by VentureBeat AI.

We anticipate more studios will adopt this model as competition for premium streaming space heats up throughout 2026. Chhaava OTT
