Suriya’s Karuppu Crosses Rs. 238 Cr Worldwide — The Tamil Comeback Nobody Saw Coming

Suriya is back, and how! After nearly seven years of box office drought, the actor’s latest film Karuppu has turned into a full-blown blockbuster. As of its second weekend, the film has crossed Rs. 238 crore worldwide — and it’s showing no signs of stopping.

Karuppu Box Office Collections: Overview

The Suriya starrer has accumulated USD 7 million (approx. Rs. 67 crore) overseas and Rs. 171.25 crore from India, bringing the total worldwide gross to approximately Rs. 238 crore after 10 days in theatres.

The film crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark on its second Saturday — a milestone Suriya had never achieved before.

How Is It Holding Overseas?

The second weekend overseas pulled in around USD 1.30 million — a roughly 70% drop from the opening weekend, which is fairly standard for Tamil films that tend to be front-loaded. The Middle East saw the steepest fall at around 90%, while Singapore held rock steady and Malaysia posted one of the strongest second weekends of all time for a Tamil release.

Why Karuppu Matters Beyond the Numbers?

This isn’t just a box office story — it’s a Tamil film industry story. With Vijay stepping away from cinema for politics, Rajinikanth ageing, and Ajith pursuing a racing career with fewer releases, the Tamil industry desperately needed a bankable star. Karuppu’s success is being seen as a godsend at just the right time.

The film is now firmly on course to cross the Rs. 300 crore worldwide mark before its theatrical run ends.

The box office phenomenon of Karuppu is a textbook case of what word-of-mouth marketing can do for a film when the content connects emotionally with audiences.
