After the first leg, the semi-final tie was evenly poised at 1-1 and it seemed that Real Madrid were getting close to an impossible La Liga and Champions League double. But things were very different in the second leg as they lost 2-0 to Chelsea and were knocked out of the tournament.
Zidane changed his formation to 3-5-2 with Mendy and Vinicius playing as wing-backs, but both of them were very ineffective and were subbed off in the second half. Ramos and Hazard returned from injury and started the match but failed to have any impact on the game.
Zidane commented about playing Eden Hazard from the start: “”Eden has to play. He has to regain his confidence, little by little, by playing.”
“We played a semi-final and the players were prepared. If they played, it means that they were prepared. We can be proud of my players, we have tried and we have come this far, one step away from the final.”
But what has angered the Real Madrid fans more than the loss is the image of Eden Hazard laughing with his former Chelsea teammates after the loss. He congratulated the winning side and was even spotted by the TV cameras sharing a joke with some of the men in Blues.
This has not gone down at all well in Madrid. Real Madrid fans are fuming on social media at the sight of their superstar signing looking so content after losing a Champions League semi-final.
