Chris Evans, Anya Taylor-Joy & Charli XCX in Sacrifice— Netflix Just Acquired the Most Star-Studded Eco-Thriller of 2026

A movie star in existential crisis. A doomsday cult leader. A charity gala that goes completely off the rails. Netflix has officially acquired the US rights to Sacrifice, director Romain Gavras’ highly anticipated satirical eco-thriller — and the cast alone will make your head spin. What’s on Netflix

Sacrifice on Netflix — Overview

What Is Sacrifice About?

During a star-studded charity gala brimming with celebrities, billionaires, and empty speeches, a movie star in the midst of an existential crisis is taken hostage by a radical warrior and her devoted followers. As the night descends into chaos, both an inward journey and an outward adventure ensue, where the line between performance and belief, salvation and sacrifice, begins to blur.

Think Don’t Look Up meets Mad Max — a biting, chaotic satire on celebrity activism, climate performativity, and what it truly means to believe in something. The film takes direct aim at the ouroboros of the world’s performative reaction to climate change.

The Cast — An Absolutely Stacked Lineup

Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit, Furiosa) plays Joan — the radical leader of a doomsday eco-cult. Chris Evans (The Gray Man, Knives Out) plays Mike Tyler, a successful but completely oblivious action star looking for a comeback. Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) plays Braken, a shady billionaire pushing deep-sea mining. Salma Hayek Pinault plays Gloria Bracken, and John Malkovich plays Joan’s father.

Rounding out this wild ensemble are Sam Richardson, Swedish rapper Yung Lean, Ambika Mod, Jade Croot, Jeremy O. Harris, and pop sensation Charli XCX.

It’s the kind of cast you’d expect to see at the Oscars — not causing mayhem at a charity gala.

The Director — Romain Gavras

Directed by acclaimed French-Greek filmmaker Romain Gavras, best known to Netflix subscribers for his jaw-dropping 2022 action epic Athena, Sacrifice is shaping up to be one of the wildest streaming releases of the year. Gavras is renowned for his kinetic visual style, operatic scale, and films that blur the line between spectacle and social commentary. What’s on Netflix

The film is rooted in the tradition of satirical cinema — a genre with a long history of using absurdist comedy to deliver the sharpest of social critiques.

What Are Critics Saying?

Sacrifice premiered at TIFF 2025 to a mixed reception, earning a 37% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers noted it was “messy, strange, and somewhat baffling” — though Evans received particular praise for being “wildly funny as a flailing actor who’s not the brightest.”

But here’s the thing — Netflix audiences and critics don’t always agree. With a cast this magnetic and a premise this unhinged, it could absolutely become a cult favourite once it hits the platform.
