Athiradi Box Office Day 1: Basil Joseph & Tovino Thomas Prove Malayalam Cinema Doesn’t Need Superstars to Sell Out Theatres

Malayalam cinema is having quite a week — and while one big-budget film stumbled, a college-comedy underdog just roared out of the gate with one of the most exciting Day 1 openings of 2026.

Athiradi, the action-comedy entertainer directed by Arun Anirudhan and featuring the crowd-pleasing duo of Basil Joseph and Tovino Thomas, has smashed expectations right from Day 1. And Kerala’s cinemas are buzzing.

Athiradi Kerala Box Office — Day 1 Collections

The film collected Rs. 6 crore on its debut day, including paid previews — with Rs. 60 lakh coming in from Wednesday preview shows alone and Rs. 5.40 crore on the actual opening day.

That’s a thunderous start. To put it in perspective, this is the kind of opening Kerala cinema usually reserves for its biggest franchise films — not a fresh, mid-budget entertainer with no franchise backing.

What Is Athiradi About?

The film follows Samkutty, an enthusiastic and overzealous college student who falls in love with his classmate. Over time, he gains popularity among his peers and decides to revive a long-banned festival at his college. The festival was originally banned due to the involvement of Sreekuttan Vellayani, a local goon and aspiring singer. As news spreads, the two end up in a fiery feud that can only end in a full-blown brawl.

College rivalries, forbidden festivals, and fistfights — honestly, it sounds like an absolute blast.

Why This Opening Matters

The film met with a mainly positive reception among audiences, and with that word-of-mouth boost, it has the potential to emerge as a Clean Hit venture at the box office.

This is exactly the kind of film that builds momentum over the weekend. A strong opening day + good audience reaction = the recipe for a surprise blockbuster. Malayalam cinema has proven time and again that the right story with the right energy doesn’t need a Mammootty or Mohanlal to fill seats.

What to Expect Next?

The film is expected to see a good hold in the days ahead and record a massive opening weekend. If the buzz from Thursday night shows and Friday morning screenings carries forward, Athiradi could comfortably cross the Rs. 20 crore mark by Sunday — and that would put it firmly in hit territory.
