Jaafar Jackson Didn’t Just Play Michael — He Became Him, Says Co-Star Colman Domingo

There are performances that impress you, and then there are performances that stop you in your tracks and make you catch your breath. According to Oscar-nominated actor Colman Domingo, watching Jaafar Jackson step into the shoes — and soul — of his legendary uncle Michael Jackson on the set of the upcoming biopic Michael was very much the latter kind of experience.

Colman Domingo, who plays the role of Joe Jackson — Michael’s father — in the film, exclusively shared his experience of watching Jaafar become the iconic star: “The first time I saw Jaafar, he was performing as Michael, and I had several feelings. First, I was just purely moved. But then I also had this strange feeling of wanting to protect and look after him. I trusted in that very real feeling as what motivates Joe to be how he is.”

What Makes Jaafar’s Performance So Special?

Domingo went further, explaining precisely what made Jaafar’s performance extraordinary beyond mere physical resemblance: “Jaafar is something special. What fascinated me is that Jaafar didn’t just move like Michael moved, he tapped into why Michael moved that way, what every gesture meant to Michael. It’s an alchemy between actor and real-life person I’ve very rarely seen before.”

That word — alchemy — says everything. This is not an actor imitating a legend. This is a young man who grew up watching his uncle, who carries the same bloodline, finding the truth behind every movement, every expression. It’s the kind of casting that feels predestined rather than chosen. You can read more about Michael Jackson’s extraordinary life and musical legacy on Wikipedia.
