Is Pralay a Remake of Blindness? The Truth

Short answer: No. Producer Hansal Mehta has categorically dismissed the remake speculation in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India. He confirmed that director Jai Mehta and co-writer Vishal Kapoor have crafted an entirely original story. Mehta also pointed out that adapting Blindness — the 2008 Fernando Meirelles film based on Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago’s novel — would have been a tremendously complex undertaking given the literary source material involved. Pralay simply isn’t connected to it.

So where did the confusion come from? Both stories involve a sudden, unexplained epidemic causing societal collapse — but that’s where the similarity ends. Pralay is set in a post-apocalyptic world dealing with a zombie outbreak, not blindness.

How Did Ranveer Singh Get Involved?

This is actually a lovely behind-the-scenes story. Director Jai Mehta had been quietly developing this concept for a long time before anyone else knew about it. When Ranveer Singh came across Jai’s work, he personally reached out. After the pitch, Ranveer was immediately on board — and the project began taking real shape from that point. His passion was clearly so deep that he didn’t just sign on as the lead but also joined as a co-producer under his own banner, Maa Kasam Films.

That kind of personal investment from a star of Ranveer’s calibre speaks volumes about the potential of the film.

Why Pralay Has Everyone Excited

This film is shaping up to be Ranveer Singh’s most ambitious and expensive project yet. A first-time director, an original zombie thriller concept, a potential Bollywood debut for Kalyani Priyadarshan — the ingredients are fascinating. Bollywood has rarely attempted the large-scale zombie thriller genre with serious production value, which is what makes Pralay genuinely unprecedented in the Indian film space.
