The Stars of The Summer I Turned Pretty Are Heading to the Big Screen!

The beloved Prime Video series is getting its movie finale — but a brewing salary controversy has cast a shadow over what should have been a triumphant announcement. Here’s everything you need to know.

What’s Going On in The Summer I Turned Prett?

The cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty reportedly signed the conclusive film under duress because their salary increases for the final season were tied to agreeing to the movie, leaving them with limited negotiating power.

In plain terms: sign the movie deal or risk losing the pay raise you’ve already earned. That’s a tough spot for any actor — but especially for young breakout stars who had little leverage when they first signed on.

The Salary Timeline at a Glance

As the series’ lead, Lola Tung is believed to have made more than her male counterparts over the span of the series. Despite the show becoming a global cultural phenomenon, agents reportedly went back to the table to ask for bonuses or further increases for the movie, but were turned away — with studios holding the young stars to their existing contracts.

Two Sides of the Story

The talent perspective: some reps claim the actors felt “forced” to sign the movie deal “under duress” just to secure the pay bumps they felt they had already earned. The studio perspective: sources close to production maintain the cast was aligned with the vision and signed on willingly. Gulf News

It’s a classic he-said-she-said — except the power imbalance here is very real, and the entertainment industry is watching closely.

Production & What Comes Next

On April 27, cameras are set to start rolling in Wilmington, NC on The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, with Lola Tung as Belly, Christopher Briney as Conrad, and Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah all returning. Deadline

Talent sources are calling the TSITP situation “a dangerous precedent” for how young actors are treated — with one longtime industry insider asking: “Are we back in a studio system where you own the actors?”
