The Truthers on Netflix — The Spanish Thriller from the Elite Writers That Could Be Your Next Obsession This July

If Money Heist made you fall in love with Spanish storytelling and Elite kept you glued to your screen season after season, brace yourself. The creative minds behind Elite are back — and this time, they’ve crafted something far more intimate, far more unsettling, and set entirely within one family’s darkest secrets.

The Truthers (Los Creyentes) — Everything You Need to Know

What’s the Story?

Ruth, a 30-year-old woman who has been estranged from her family, returns home after her mother dies under mysterious circumstances. She reunites with her father Martín, who since retiring has become a grumpy, aggressive man obsessed with a sinister conspiracy theory. The tension between them grows so intense — and his behavior so erratic — that Ruth begins to suspect Martín may be responsible for her mother’s death. whats-on-netflix

In short: imagine coming home for grief and leaving wondering if the man who raised you is a murderer. That’s the chilling premise driving this film — and it’s exactly the kind of slow-burn domestic dread that psychological thriller fans live for.

The Creative Pedigree Behind It

The film is directed by Roger Gual, known for Gangs of Galicia, and written by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona — the duo behind Netflix’s massively popular Elite — who also serve as executive producers alongside Diego Betancor. whats-on-netflix

That creative bloodline matters. Elite was one of Netflix’s defining international hits, proving that Spanish-language storytelling could command a truly global audience. To understand why psychological thrillers have become one of streaming’s most dominant genres, Wikipedia offers a solid breakdown of what makes the format so compulsively watchable.

Cast to Watch

The film stars Jose Coronado as Martín, Stéphanie Magnin (known from The Crown) as Ruth, Fanny Gautier (Olympo) as Lucía, and Alberto Olmo (Montecristo) as Arón. whats-on-netflix

Coronado in particular is a Spanish screen veteran — seeing him play an unsettling, potentially dangerous father figure is the kind of casting that makes the tension feel lived-in and real.
