What Is Strangers About?

Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage is the raw, real-life account of author Belle Burden — a woman with an Ivy League background and what appeared to be a perfect life. Then, in March 2020 at the height of the pandemic, her husband of 20 years abruptly walked out with no warning or explanation, becoming overnight a person she barely recognised.

The memoir — which first caught fire through a viral Modern Love essay — explores narcissistic abuse, betrayal, and the terrifying realisation that you might not truly know the person you share your life with. It’s been called a “hypnotic nail-biter” and a “must-read for every wife — and husband.” The book shot to the top of the New York Times bestseller list in mid-January 2026 and has held firm for eight weeks straight. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Big Return

This is a genuinely significant moment. Paltrow has spent recent years building her Goop wellness empire, but her recent turn in the A24 film Marty Supreme — which earned a remarkable nine Academy Award nominations — reminded the world just how compelling she is on screen. Strangers feels like the perfect vehicle to fully cement that return: emotionally demanding, critically relevant, and based on source material that audiences are already deeply invested in.

This will be her second major Netflix project, following her role in Ryan Murphy’s The Politician. The creative team behind Strangers is equally impressive — Stacey Sher, the two-time Oscar-nominated producer behind Erin Brockovich and Django Unchained, is on board, alongside Tony-nominated playwright and screenwriter Heidi Schreck.
