After the critical and emotional tsunami that was When Life Gives You Tangerines, IU could have taken any project in the world. She chose Perfect Crown — a monarchy romance set in an alternate Korea, opposite Byeon Woo Seok. And her reasons for doing so are as interesting as the drama itself.

Why Did IU Choose Perfect Crown?

IU shared her reasons for choosing the drama: “The title is unique, so it left an impression. Each of the character’s personalities stood out, and they were intertwined in an interesting way. In particular, Hee Joo’s unpredictable behaviour and her power to carry out those actions felt charming.” Wikipedia

That instinct — chasing unpredictability — says everything about why IU consistently picks projects that push her range further.

Who Is Sung Hee Joo?

Sung Hee Joo is the head of Castle Beauty — a woman who has beauty, ability, and wealth, but because the authority of the aristocratic class is so powerful, she constantly runs up against the limits of her status as a commoner and a child born out of wedlock. Wikipedia

IU described Hee Joo as someone with “uncontrollable ambition and an eccentric personality” at the start — but one who grows increasingly layered as the drama progresses: “As the drama progresses and her deficiencies are filled, she shows her cute yet cool side.” Wikipedia

IU’s Acting Approach for the Role

IU shared her performance philosophy: “Although Hee Joo is skilled at hiding her vulnerability through cynical expressions and behaviours, I didn’t want to miss moments where her loneliness and fragility inevitably show through. I tried to differentiate when Hee Joo was enjoying the dopamine and when she wasn’t through the liveliness in her voice and facial expressions.” Wikipedia

That kind of emotional precision — tracking when a character is genuinely happy versus performing happiness — is exactly what made IU’s work in Hotel Del Luna and My Mister so unforgettable.

Why Should You Watch Perfect Crown?

IU herself picked three reasons to look forward to the drama: “the fast-paced development in the first half, the interwoven emotions between characters, and the emotional love story in the latter half.” Wikipedia
