If you stayed up watching KPop Demon Hunters and immediately wished there was more — your patience has finally paid off. Netflix has officially confirmed a sequel to its record-smashing animated film, and the creative duo behind the original is returning to make it happen.

KPop Demon Hunters— The Sequel Is Greenlit

Netflix announced on March 12, 2026 that a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is in development, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans both signed on to return. The announcement came alongside news of an exclusive, multi-year writing and directing deal between the duo and Netflix — focused entirely on animation — making this sequel the very first project under that new partnership.

The timing is no coincidence either. The confirmation came just days before the film was poised to compete at the 2026 Academy Awards, where it is among the top nominees.

Why This Sequel Is a Massive Deal

The original KPop Demon Hunters is, by every metric, Netflix’s most-watched movie in the platform’s history — 965.5 million viewing hours and 579 million completed views across 38 straight weeks in the global Top 10. Those numbers are staggering, and they made a sequel inevitable.

Sony Animation bosses, however, have already tempered timeline expectations — a 2029 release target floated by Bloomberg in late 2025 has since been walked back, with studio leadership suggesting the sequel is unlikely to arrive before 2030.

What the Creators Are Saying

Director Maggie Kang, a Korean filmmaker, spoke about the personal significance of returning: her pride that audiences want more from a Korean story with Korean characters, adding “this is only the beginning.” Chris Appelhans described the characters as “family” and the world as their “second home.”

Netflix Film Chairman Dan Lin called it “the most popular Netflix movie of all time” and confirmed there’s much more story left to tell in the HUNTR/X universe.

KPop Demon Hunters is rooted in the global phenomenon of K-pop — a genre that has transformed worldwide pop culture and continues to grow its fanbase across every continent, making this franchise a genuine cultural event, not just a streaming hit.
