KPop Demon Hunters One Year Later: Netflix’s Biggest Movie Celebrates Unprecedented Record-Breaking Success with 600M+ Views, Oscars Sweep, and Sequel Confirmation

A year ago, Netflix changed the game forever. On June 20, 2025, KPop Demon Hunters premiered and became an absolute cultural phenomenon that completely shattered Netflix streaming records. Exactly one year later, the animated musical fantasy from Sony Pictures Animation is still dominating charts, winning major awards, and showing no signs of slowing down. Here’s how a Korean animated feature became Netflix’s most successful film ever.

KPop Demon Hunters: The Numbers Are Absolutely Staggering

Let’s just say the data speaks volumes. KPop Demon Hunters has racked up over 600 million views since launch and has remained in Netflix’s Global Top 10 for an entire year—an unprecedented achievement. The film reached #1 in 93 countries across Netflix, cementing its status as genuinely global entertainment. In its eleventh week, the movie peaked with a stunning 30.1 million views in a single week.

What makes this more impressive? The film has generated 20+ billion viewing minutes, surpassing other Netflix blockbusters like Red Notice and Carry-On by massive margins. This isn’t just a win—it’s total dominance.

Awards Season Was an Absolute Sweep

Spring 2026 proved KPop Demon Hunters wasn’t just a viewership phenomenon—it was an artistic masterpiece. The film claimed prestigious wins at virtually every major awards ceremony:

• 2 Academy Awards: Best Animated Feature & Best Original Song (“Golden”)
• 2 Golden Globe Awards: Same categories as the Oscars
• 2 Critics’ Choice Movie Awards: Animated Feature & Original Song
• 10 Annie Awards: Including Best Feature, Voice Acting, Music & Directing

A soundtrack achieving platinum status typically requires years—KPop Demon Hunters hit double platinum in just months on Spotify, with over 15 billion streams. The hit single “Golden” alone accumulated 1.77 billion streams, rivaling releases from Ariana Grande, Rihanna, and SZA.

Cultural Impact & Merchandise Explosion

The film’s influence transcended streaming. Major retailers entered the KPop Demon Hunters universe with collaborations featuring Mattel, HASBRO, LEGO, McDonald’s, and luxury fashion brands like Zara. Funko Pops, NERF toys, and special LEGO sets became instant collectibles. An official Sing-Along theatrical version debuted in August 2025, introducing fans to immersive concert experiences.

The soundtrack achievements led to spinoff tribute shows like Planet K-pop and K-POP All Stars that heavily drew inspiration from the film.

What’s Next: Sequel Confirmed for 2029

Director Maggie Kang announced in March 2026 that a sequel is officially in development with original co-director Chris Appelhans returning. “There’s so much more to this world we have built,” Kang said, noting her pride as a Korean filmmaker telling Korean stories with Korean characters to global audiences.

Success Overview Table

The film follows K-pop stars Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) who become secret demon hunters protecting their fans.
