Steps Movie Cast

What Is the Steps Movie About?

Steps is an animated film coming to Netflix directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, starring the voices of Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu as Cinderella’s not-so-evil sisters.

The movie follows Lilith, voiced by Ali Wong, who is blamed for derailing the Royal Ball after mishandling a magic wand. In the chaos, she inadvertently transforms her sister Margot, voiced by Stephanie Hsu, into a frog. Their mistake leaves the kingdom in the hands of a prince-obsessed antagonist, prompting Lilith to join forces with Cinderella and an unexpected ally — a troll who plays a larger role in her journey — to set things right.

The premise is refreshingly subversive — this is not the Cinderella story. The stepsisters are the misunderstood protagonists here, and the film leans hard into sibling dynamics, redemption, and the idea that villains aren’t born — they’re just unlucky.

Why This Cast Is Perfect

Ali Wong and Stephanie Hsu are two of Hollywood’s most precise comedic talents right now. Wong and Netflix have been frequent partners of late, with their most notable collaboration, the darkly comedic anthology series Beef, earning two Emmys for the actress. Meanwhile, Hsu also has significant voice-acting experience, with smaller parts in Blue Eye Samurai and Star Wars: Visions, and claiming one of the co-leads in The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy.

Put them together as bickering, frog-transforming, crown-saving stepsisters? That’s box office chemistry without even trying.

The Dream Team Behind the Camera

Steps is directed by Alyce Tzue, who won the 2015 Student Academy Awards Gold Medal for Animation with her short Soar, and Raya and the Last Dragon co-director John Ripa. Produced by the iconic Amy Poehler alongside Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing, the creative pedigree here is extraordinary for a debut animated feature.

The project is produced by Netflix’s internal Netflix Animation Studio — the same team behind KPop Demon Hunters, which has become the biggest film in the streamer’s history.

Cinderella has been adapted countless times across film, theatre, and animation — but a full-length feature placing the stepsisters as sympathetic protagonists is genuinely new territory.
