The team behind Netflix’s wildly successful Big Mouth is trading puberty’s cringe-worthy chaos for something even more primal—horny forest creatures navigating love, sex, and the universal need to perpetuate their species. Mating Season, dropping May 22, 2026, proves that awkward romance isn’t just a human problem.

From Big Mouth to Wild Mouths

With Big Mouth concluding after eight groundbreaking seasons in 2025, fans worried the irreverent, heart-filled humor would disappear. Instead, creators Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett are transferring that signature blend of awkwardness and authenticity to the animal kingdom.

John Derderian, Netflix’s Vice President of Animation Series, captured the transition perfectly: “Big Mouth broke new ground in the world of adult animation with heart, humor, and total chaos—they took the awkwardness of adolescence and turned it into something universal and deeply human. Now, with Mating Season, they’ll bring that same bold and hilarious creativity into the animal kingdom.”

Meet the Species

The Valentine’s Day cast reveal introduced us to Netflix’s newest animal ensemble, featuring comedy heavyweights voicing lovable forest critters:

Zach Woods (The Office, Silicon Valley) voices Josh, likely bringing his trademark nervous energy to whatever species he inhabits. June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie, Big Mouth) returns to the Brutus Pink universe as Fawn, while Sabrina Jalees (Search Party, Big Mouth) rounds out the main cast as Penelope.

The series promises a host of woodland creatures—bears, raccoons, deer, foxes—all navigating the complicated business of finding partners, making connections, and perpetuating their species with all the comedy and chaos that entails.

What Makes This Different?

While Big Mouth focused on the universal awkwardness of puberty, Mating Season expands the lens to adult relationships and romantic dynamics—except everyone’s covered in fur, feathers, or scales. The setup allows for clever commentary on human dating culture through the safely absurd distance of anthropomorphized animals.

Expect the same frank discussions of sexuality, relationships, and emotional vulnerability that made Big Mouth resonate with audiences, but filtered through the animal kingdom’s natural mating rituals. The result? Comedy that’s simultaneously more absurd and somehow more relatable.
