Internal testing now refers to ChromeOS as “ChromeOS Classic,” signaling the transition. The unified platform aims to eliminate Google’s dual-system approach, creating one OS that works smoothly across all device types with full Android app compatibility on larger screens.

Google confirmed at the Snapdragon Summit that Aluminium OS will become available in 2026, with testing currently happening on Android 16 builds. Not all existing Chromebooks will support the migration, though unsupported devices should continue receiving security updates until their ChromeOS versions reach end-of-life.
