Onto the Finals of Malaysian Esports Championship (MEC 2020)

ESI Closes In on Final Rounds of MEC 2020, First of Many in Developmental Roadmap

The inaugural Malaysian Esports Championship (MEC 2020) is nearing its climax as local esports talents head into the final rounds. MEC 2020, which kicked off in December 2020, is organised by Esports Integrated (ESI), an initiative launched by Impact Integrated, under the purview of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KSB). The Company Limited By Guarantee (CLBG) consists of five entities, namely: Impact Malaysia, an initiative for youth development and social innovation; Rakita, a multi-channel infotainment media brand tailored for youth; Spacerubix, an inspirational hub inclusive of event spaces and sports complex in Puchong; Picksum, a marketplace platform for local homegrown products; and Esports Integrated, an initiative to catalyse a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive esports ecosystem.

The championship of esports talents kicked off last month, reporting a total of 11,370 verified accounts that registered for the MEC 2020. After rounds of hard-won battles on the esports battlefield, the Top 16 teams made it into the final rounds for PlayerUnknown’s Battleground (PUBG), Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and FIFA 21 whereas it is down to the Top 4 to snatch the championship for Dota 2. Furthermore, through Esports Integrated’s collaboration with Tencent and Moonton, the Top 2 teams will earn a seat slot into MPL Qualifiers for Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and PUBG Mobile Malaysia National Championship (PMNC) respectively. The final rounds will be available on livestream on ESI – Esports Integrated’s Facebook Page, and the full schedule is available on Facebook.

“As MEC 2020 is the first step of ESI’s developmental roadmap, it is great to see that it garnered such great response and participation from local talents. This is a testament to how ESI continues to grow and cultivate a sustainable esports community in Malaysia,” said Dato’ Sri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, Minister of Youth and Sports.

“MEC 2020 has successfully proven that there is a thriving esports community in Malaysia. Thus, it will strengthen ESI’s movement to continuously establish the position of esports locally by engaging the homegrown talents and creating viable career opportunities in the industry for the youths,” shared Ahmed Faris Amir, CEO of ESI and Impact Malaysia.
