ROG Xbox Ally Hands-On Preview: The $600 Gaming Handheld That Surprised Us

The ROG Xbox Ally is making waves in the handheld gaming market, and we got our hands on this Asus-Microsoft collaboration at Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show 2025. Priced at just $599.99, this device promises to deliver PC gaming power with seamless Xbox integration—but does it live up to the hype?

First Impressions: Surprisingly Light and Comfortable

The moment I picked up the ROG Xbox Ally, one thing stood out immediately—it’s incredibly light. At just over 600 grams, this handheld feels deceptively nimble for the hardware it packs. I tested it for 15+ minutes continuously without any hand fatigue, which is remarkable considering it runs AAA titles at full HD.

Compared to the Nintendo Switch 2, which weighs 100 grams less, the ROG Xbox Ally actually feels more comfortable during extended sessions thanks to its superior ergonomic design. The grips fit naturally in your hands, distributing weight evenly across your palms.

ROG Xbox Ally Technical Specifications at a Glance

The star of the show is undoubtedly the AMD Ryzen Z2 processor. This chip delivers impressive performance at 28W TDP, enabling smooth gameplay for demanding titles while maintaining reasonable temperatures. Paired with 16GB of fast LPDDR5 RAM, the device handles multitasking and modern games with ease.

Build Quality: A Mixed Bag

Here’s where things get interesting. While the ROG Xbox Ally excels in ergonomics and performance, the build quality leaves room for improvement. The white matte plastic finish contributes to the lighter weight but feels less premium than expected. It’s not brittle, but it doesn’t inspire the same confidence as metal or high-grade materials.

The positives:

• Exceptional joysticks with perfect tension for precise control
• Responsive ABXY and face buttons with satisfying feedback
• Hall Effect analog triggers ideal for shooters
• RGB accent strip on the back adds visual flair

The drawbacks:

• Plastic chassis feels somewhat cheap
• Side grips may not suit users with larger hands
• Sweat resistance could be better

I tested the controls extensively with Hollow Knight Silksong, executing complex pogo jumps effortlessly. The joysticks strike the perfect balance—smooth enough for precision, firm enough to prevent accidental inputs.

Xbox Integration: Game Pass Users Rejoice

The collaboration with Microsoft brings one-button Xbox App access, transforming this into a Game Pass dream machine. With an active subscription, you can instantly access your entire library without navigating complex menus.

Storage optimization is impressive too. Despite having Windows, Xbox App, Hollow Knight Silksong, and several demos installed, the device showed 475GB free space out of 512GB total. That’s exceptional compression and management.

However, note that this isn’t an Xbox console replacement—it’s designed to bring the PC gaming experience to handheld format. You’ll still need keyboard shortcuts for certain Windows functions, which feels slightly awkward on a handheld device.

Performance: Cool Under Pressure

During 15 minutes of intensive Silksong gameplay, the ROG Xbox Ally remained impressively cool. Even after multiple users played demanding titles like Ninja Gaiden 4, the device barely felt warm to the touch. The top air vents efficiently expelled heat without creating distracting noise levels.

Display and Audio:

• The 1080p IPS panel delivers accurate colors and sufficient brightness even under direct lighting
• Haptics are decent—not best-in-class but appropriate for the price point
• Audio output proved adequate in a crowded venue, suggesting it’ll perform well in normal conditions

For handheld gaming enthusiasts, these thermal management capabilities are crucial for long gaming sessions without thermal throttling.

ROG Xbox Ally vs. Competition

Compared to the Steam Deck’s 512GB variant, the ROG Xbox Ally offers compelling advantages despite lacking an OLED display. You get higher resolution, better refresh rates, and superior Windows software integration. The Xbox ecosystem integration particularly shines for existing Game Pass subscribers.

Final Verdict: Best Value Handheld?

The ROG Xbox Ally delivers where it counts—performance, portability, and affordability. For $599.99, you’re getting reliable framerates, excellent thermal management, a vibrant display, and seamless Game Pass integration. The lightweight construction and solid ergonomics make extended sessions genuinely comfortable.

Yes, the plastic build quality could be better, and the grips may not suit everyone’s hands perfectly. But these compromises feel reasonable given the competitive pricing. For gamers seeking a portable gaming solution that doesn’t sacrifice performance, the ROG Xbox Ally presents a compelling mid-range option.

If you’re already invested in the Xbox ecosystem with a Game Pass subscription, this handheld becomes even more attractive. It’s not perfect, but it offers tremendous value for portable PC and Xbox gaming.
