Netflix has officially secured the exclusive global rights to bring the beloved board game “Catan” to life through a diverse range of adaptations, spanning live-action and animated films, scripted and unscripted television series, and even gaming projects. This exciting development marks the first-ever screen adaptation of the “Catan” universe, promising to immerse both longtime fans and newcomers in a captivating new narrative world.

Catan: From Board Game Sensation to Screen

Originally launched in Germany in 1995 as “The Settlers of Catan” by Klaus Teuber, Catan has become one of the most successful board games internationally, boasting over 45 million copies sold and translations in more than 40 languages. The strategic gameplay involves players navigating an island, collecting and trading resources like sheep, wood, and wheat, building roads and settlements, and outmaneuvering opponents and robbers to score points.

Netflix’s Vision for Catan Adaptations

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s Head of Scripted Series in the U.S. and Canada, highlighted the potential in the game’s deep strategic elements to create compelling drama. Netflix aims to weave stories around settlers traversing lush, varied landscapes, managing scarce resources, and forming shifting alliances while remaining alert to lurking dangers.

The projects, produced in collaboration with Asmodee (the game’s publisher), Catan Studio, and key figures from the Teuber family, will include a rich mix of formats to satisfy diverse audience tastes, from high-quality scripted series to unscripted content highlighting the game’s dynamics.

The Partnership’s Broader Implications

This deal continues Netflix’s expanding slate of game-to-screen adaptations, adding to its portfolio of successful series and films based on games such as “Arcane,” “Castlevania,” and upcoming projects like “Gears of War” and “Bioshock.” It also reflects the growing cultural significance of board gaming as a popular entertainment form, bridging generations and fostering community.
