WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.28.12 includes a new username reservation feature, allowing users to secure their preferred handles before the full username system rolls out publicly. After over two years of testing usernames internally, WhatsApp is finally preparing to let early adopters reserve their desired @handles ahead of the wider release expected by end of 2025.

How Username Reservation Works

The reservation system acts as a preparatory step ensuring fair access to desirable usernames. Users in the beta program can secure their preferred handles early, preventing the inevitable rush when the feature launches globally. This approach prevents unfair advantages for beta testers while giving everyone equal opportunity to claim unique identifiers.

Unlike the complete username system that grants full functionality, the reservation feature simply locks in your chosen handle. Once usernames officially launch, reserved handles automatically transfer to users’ accounts without requiring additional steps or risking someone else claiming them.

Privacy and Contact Control

The username system includes a “username key” feature limiting who can contact users via their handles. This anti-spam measure gives users granular control over discoverability—you can share your username publicly while maintaining privacy by requiring a special key for strangers to initiate conversations.

This approach mirrors Telegram’s username system, which lets users maintain phone number privacy while remaining reachable through public handles. WhatsApp’s implementation adds an extra security layer with the optional key requirement.

Two Years in the Making

WhatsApp first began testing usernames in late 2022, making this one of the platform’s longest development cycles. The extended timeline reflects the complexity of implementing usernames across WhatsApp’s massive two billion+ user base while maintaining the platform’s end-to-end encryption and privacy standards.

The phased rollout starting with reservation suggests WhatsApp learned from other platforms’ username launches that often resulted in confusion, squatting, and unfair advantages for early adopters. By separating reservation from full functionality, WhatsApp ensures smoother implementation.

What This Means for Users

Currently, WhatsApp requires phone numbers for adding contacts and initiating conversations. Usernames will provide an alternative connection method, particularly valuable for business accounts, public figures, and users wanting to maintain phone number privacy.

The feature particularly benefits those joining group chats, participating in communities, or networking professionally without exposing personal phone numbers. Users can share business cards, social media profiles, or websites with WhatsApp usernames instead of distributing their actual phone numbers.

Availability Timeline

The username reservation feature remains under development in beta version 2.25.28.12 for Android, not yet available to all beta users. WhatsApp plans broader beta distribution before the full username system launches, likely in Q4 2025 based on current development pace.

iOS users can expect similar timeline, though Android typically receives WhatsApp beta features first before cross-platform releases.
