iPhone 17 Air Gets Apple’s Custom 5G Modem: C1 or C2 Chip?

Leaked code reveals that both iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17e will feature Apple’s custom 5G modem, marking a significant shift away from Qualcomm dependency. However, questions remain about which generation of Apple’s baseband chip these devices will receive.

Custom 5G Modem Deployment

C1 vs C2: The Critical Difference

The leaked code doesn’t specify whether Apple will use the existing C1 or newer C2 modem. This distinction matters significantly for Indian consumers, as the C1 modem lacks mmWave network support, limiting high-speed 5G capabilities in certain regions.

The C2 modem, reportedly in development, addresses this limitation by supporting mmWave networks, making it crucial for flagship smartphone performance in India’s evolving 5G landscape.

Apple’s Independence Strategy

This move represents Apple’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on Qualcomm for wireless connectivity. The iPhone 17 Air could become Apple’s first device featuring both custom 5G and Wi-Fi chips, showcasing complete wireless solution integration.

For iPhone buyers in India, this transition could mean better optimization between hardware and software, potentially improving battery life and performance.

Market Impact for Indian Consumers

If Apple deploys the C1 modem in the iPhone 17 Air, Indian users might experience limited 5G performance compared to Qualcomm-powered alternatives. However, the C2’s potential inclusion could match or exceed current 5G smartphone capabilities.

The iPhone 17e’s 2026 launch suggests Apple is taking a measured approach, possibly testing custom modems in select models before full lineup integration.

Launch Timeline Expectations

Apple’s September 9, 2025 launch event will likely reveal final modem specifications. Until then, the C1 vs C2 question remains Apple’s closely guarded secret.

This wireless chip transition could reshape India’s premium smartphone market, especially if Apple achieves parity with Qualcomm’s flagship modems.
