Nagarjuna Calls Out Directors While Praising Lokesh Kanagaraj for Saving ₹5 Crore in Coolie

In an industry where budget overruns have become the norm, Nagarjuna Akkineni has made headlines by praising director Lokesh Kanagaraj for his exceptional financial discipline on Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie. The veteran actor’s comments highlight a growing concern about filmmaking costs while celebrating efficient direction that benefits everyone involved.

The ₹5 Crore Praise That’s Making Waves

Finishing a big film within time and budget is rare these days, especially when the cast includes stars from multiple industries, but Lokesh Kanagaraj has managed exactly that with Coolie. Nagarjuna specifically highlighted how the young director saved ₹5 crore for the producers through smart planning and efficient execution.

Coolie: A Star-Studded Extravaganza

The film stars Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj and Aamir Khan, making it one of the most diverse star casts in recent memory.

The Budget Challenge in Modern Cinema

Nagarjuna’s comments come at a time when the film industry faces mounting pressure over escalating production costs. Many recent big-budget films have struggled with:

Common Budget Issues:

• Extended shooting schedules due to poor planning
• Reshoots causing additional expenses
• Star availability conflicts leading to delays
• Location and equipment costs spiraling out of control

Lokesh’s Efficient Approach:

• Meticulous pre-production planning
• Smart scheduling to maximize star availability
• Cost-effective yet high-quality execution
• Collaborative approach with all departments

Why This Matters for the Industry

After Shankar, Lokesh Kanagaraj has received Rs 50 crore salary for directing Coolie, making his cost-consciousness even more impressive. When a director earning such a substantial fee still prioritizes saving money for producers, it sets a powerful example for the industry.

Behind-the-Scenes Excellence

The production of Coolie has been marked by several positive developments:

Thailand Schedule Success: Rajinikanth, while shooting in Thailand, gifted packets to all 350 members on the set in order to enable them to buy something for their children back home in India, showcasing the positive atmosphere on set.

Multi-Industry Collaboration: Managing stars from Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam industries requires exceptional organizational skills, which Lokesh has demonstrated brilliantly.

The Lokesh Kanagaraj Phenomenon

Since his debut with Maanagaram (2017), Lokesh has built a reputation for:

• Tight storytelling without unnecessary padding
• Efficient shoot schedules
• Strong pre-production planning
• Collaborative working style with cast and crew

His Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU) films like Kaithi, Master, and Vikram have all been completed within reasonable budgets while delivering spectacular results.

Industry Impact and Future Implications

Nagarjuna’s public praise for Lokesh’s budget discipline sends a strong message to the industry. At a time when several high-profile projects have faced budget overruns, this approach could inspire other filmmakers to prioritize efficiency without compromising quality.

Key Takeaways:

• Proper planning prevents budget overruns
