The Six Teams & Why This League Changes Everything
The six franchises — Charminar Champions, Kolkata Classics, Mumbai Aces, Nava Raipur, Rajasthan Regals and UP Prometheans — brought together India’s best professionals in a format the country has never seen in golf before. The storylines wrote themselves: 16-year-old Kartik Singh for Mumbai Aces sharing fairways with 61-year-old Mukesh Kumar of Kolkata Classics, with Ajeetesh Sandhu captaining Rajasthan Regals and Shaurya Bhattacharya leading UP Prometheans.
Team-based golf fundamentally changes the dynamic — every shot carries team consequences, not just personal ranking points. Collaboration, mentorship, and accountability replace pure individual pursuit. It’s the format shift Indian golf needed to crack open broader audiences, and the Eurosport India broadcast deal confirms that broadcasters are buying into it.
The league arrives as DP World PGTI has its most financially scaled season on record — three early-season events with ₹1.5 crore purses each, a combined pool of ₹4.5 crore, and NexGen Tour prizes rising from ₹20 lakh to ₹25 lakh per event. As TechnoSports has noted, 72 The League is the most significant format innovation in Indian professional golf since the PGTI’s founding.
The opening ceremony saw ICC Chairman Jay Shah and PGTI President Kapil Dev attend — a signal of how seriously this is being taken at the top.
