56 Days on Prime Video: Plot, Cast, Review & Dove Cameron’s Dark Romance

They met in a supermarket. A chance encounter. One look across the aisle.

Fifty-six days later, homicide detectives are standing in his apartment, staring at a body in the bathtub.

56 Days — Prime Video’s searing psychological thriller that dropped all eight episodes on February 18, 2026 — is the show that takes two former teen idols and hands them the most dangerous material of their careers. Dove Cameron (Liv & Maddie, Descendants) and Avan Jogia (Victorious) trade Disney Channel and Nickelodeon nostalgia for something far darker: a twisted, seductive, deeply unsettling love story where every tender moment is shadowed by what comes next.

The only question the series keeps asking — and that it refuses to answer until you’ve earned it — is the simplest and the most devastating: who is dead, and who killed them?

What Is 56 Days About?

56 Days follows Oliver and Ciara, who, after meeting randomly in a supermarket, fall for each other fast, and dangerously hard. Fifty-six days later, homicide investigators arrive at Oliver’s apartment to find an unidentified body — brutally murdered and intentionally decomposed.

The series cuts back and forth between two timelines: the present-day murder investigation led by Detective Lee Reardon (Karla Souza) and her partner Karl Connolly (Dorian Missick), and the 56-day affair itself — the warmth, the desire, the red flags neither Oliver nor Ciara chose to acknowledge.

The result is a dual-timeline erotic thriller that is simultaneously a love story and its autopsy. Based on Catherine Ryan Howard’s bestselling novel of the same name, the adaptation sheds the original’s COVID lockdown setting but preserves every ounce of its psychological tension and sexual charge.

Creator-producers Lisa Zwerling and Karyn Usher described it as “a sexy, emotional, thrill-ride of a show where everything pays off in the end.” On that count, the show delivers.

Our OTT Review

★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)

56 Days is a show that lives and dies by its central performances — and in Cameron and Jogia, it has two actors who understand exactly what kind of film they are making and throw themselves into it without hesitation.

Dove Cameron, in particular, has been deliberately dismantling her Disney image for years, and Ciara Wyse is the most complete step in that direction yet: morally complicated, fiercely drawn, and impossible to look away from even when the writing around her doesn’t quite keep up. Jogia’s Oliver is charming in precisely the way the genre demands — attractive enough to make the fall understandable, opaque enough to make the danger credible.

The series holds a 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics — a mixed reception that reflects both its genuine pleasures and its real weaknesses. The dual-timeline structure is the show’s sharpest tool and, in the mid-series episodes, also its liability: some stretches of the romantic arc feel repetitive before the thriller machinery fully engages. But when the two timelines finally converge and the mystery resolves, 56 Days earns every complicated emotion it’s been building toward.

Produced by James Wan’s Atomic Monster and scored by Nathan Barr, the series has the craft and ambition of a premium thriller. Whether it always delivers on that ambition is a question the first season only partially answers.

Watch it for Cameron and Jogia. Stay for the last two episodes, which are among the best the series offers.
