3 Takeaways as Manchester United defeat Barcelona 2-1 at Old Trafford

Manchester United have defeated Barcelona in their Europa League Playoffs to advance into the knockout stages. The Red Devils won by a scoreline of 2-1 at home, with Fred and Antony emerging as the difference makers in the big game.

Here are the key takeaways from the second leg of their playoff tie.

Absence of creative trio felt strongly

Pedro and Ousmane Dembele were ruled out of the fixture due to injury, while Gavi was sidelined by suspension. As a result, Xavi Hernandez could not field three of his most creative players this season. And the effects of their absence were felt strongly on the pitch.

Even though they statistically had more of the ball, they were not able to make the most of possession. And they ended the game with far fewer shots than Manchester United.

Outpaced at Old Trafford

Erik Ten Hag’s side were way too fast for Barcelona to deal with, and their early lead seemed fragile until it was gone. The introduction of Antony and Alejandro Garnacho enabled the team to play far more fluidly, and there seemed to be a threat at every Manchester United attack.

The Spanish giants simply could not keep up, and looked panicked by the time the game was over.

Erik Ten Hag’s Magic Comes Through

Barcelona are placed at the top of the La Liga table right now – but Erik Ten Hag commanded his side to a victory which saw them tear through the league leaders. He has been able to transform Manchester United back into the feared opponents that they once were.

There is an unparalleled intensity, determination and discipline to the team which was lacking for so long. And all things considered, a win on Sunday against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final might not be the only trophy that they capture this season.
