“23,000 Lives” Looks Stunning, But Does It Trust Its Audience in Netflix?

Netflix’s new German drama “23,000 Lives” pairs gorgeous cinematography with a strong lead performance — but according to a recent review from What’s on Netflix, its heavy-handed messaging keeps it from becoming the powerful film it clearly wants to be.

What the Netflix Film Is About?

Louis Hofmann, best known as Jonas from Dark, stars as Lukas, a young man who leaves his comfortable life behind to join the humanitarian group Jugend Rettet. Their mission: rescue refugees at risk of drowning in the Mediterranean Sea. What starts as a grassroots rescue effort grows into an international movement — one that eventually lands the volunteers on trial, facing prison sentences of up to twenty years and steep fines for every person they save.

What Works

The review praises the film’s technical craft without reservation. The sea cinematography is described as stunning, the rescue sequences as genuinely gripping, and director Markus Goller is said to be at his best during the film’s chaotic rescue scenes. Hofmann’s performance is singled out as another reminder of why he’s considered one of the finest German actors of his generation.

Where It Falls Short

The critique centers on the film’s messaging rather than its craft. The reviewer felt that nearly every scene is built to generate sympathy for a single perspective on migration, leaving little room for the nuance or differing viewpoints that the broader real-world debate actually involves. As a result, the review argues the film reads more like an advocacy piece than a layered drama, with its emotional beats feeling manipulative rather than earned over time.

The Verdict

The review calls “23,000 Lives” technically one of Netflix’s strongest European productions of the year, but ultimately less compelling as a piece of storytelling because of how firmly it commits to one side of a complex issue. Viewers who connect with emotionally driven, message-forward filmmaking may still find plenty to appreciate — particularly in Hofmann’s performance.
